FAQs
Answers to the questions I’m asked most often — about custom orders, timber, shipping, installation and care. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Get in touch any time; I’m always happy to talk timber, sizes and ideas.
Ordering & Customisation
Can I customise the size, timber, or finish of a light?
Sure. Almost every light can be customised in size, timber choice, finish colour, and bulb specifications. Just tell me what you’re looking for and we can decide on the best options.
How long does it take to make a custom order?
Most custom lights take 4–12 weeks from the time of ordering, depending on the complexity and current workshop schedule. I’ll give you a better timeframe when you enquire.
Do you make lights in different timber combinations (e.g. two-tone)?
Yes, I love doing two-tone combinations (such as Kahikatea and Pukatea). Many of my designs look excellent in contrasting timbers.
Can I choose a different bulb type or colour temperature?
Of course. You can choose different sizes, shapes, colour temperatures (warm white is my favourite), and even smart bulbs. Just tell me what your requirements are and I can check the availability of products and speak to my suppliers or electrician if required.
Do you offer complete bespoke designs?
Yes, although I really prefer to work on my own designs. If you have an idea or a specific space that needs something unique, I’m happy to discuss options with you.
Materials & Craftsmanship
What native New Zealand timbers do you use and why?
I mainly work with Rimu, Kahikatea, Pukatea, Miro, and occasionally Kauri. These timbers are chosen for their beauty, warmth, strength, and the lovely soft glow they cast when lit — as in the Fairytickle design. Availability from my suppliers is always a major factor too, as all timbers need to be dried to a certain moisture percentage to glue and finish properly.
Is the timber sustainably sourced?
Yes — and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I only use sustainably milled or salvaged native timbers from reputable, licensed suppliers. Many pieces come from fallen or recycled stock.
How do you finish the lights? What is hard wax oil?
I finish every light with a high-quality hard wax oil. It enhances the natural colour and grain of the timber, provides good protection, and gives a beautiful natural feel and look — unlike plastic or heavy lacquers. I can also use different finishes such as liquid glass resins and nano-tech coatings — all open for discussion.
Are your lights suitable for high or cathedral ceilings?
Yes — many of my designs were created specifically for high ceilings. I can also adjust cable lengths to suit your space.
How heavy are the lights and what ceiling strength do I need?
Most lights weigh between 4kg and 12kg. Standard ceiling joists are usually fine, but for very heavy or large pieces I recommend checking with your electrician, architect or builder. Touch base with me first and we can look at options.
Shipping & Delivery
What are your shipping costs within New Zealand?
I offer free shipping within New Zealand on all my lights.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, I can ship worldwide, but I prefer to ship locally within New Zealand. Some of my larger designs, like the Twistie or Fairytickle, have been specifically designed to break down and flat-pack for easier and more affordable transport. I can supply assembly sheets where necessary.
What are your lead times within New Zealand?
Depending on the design and timber availability, anywhere from 3–6 weeks (all going well) for manufacture, and 2–5 business days for delivery nationwide. Unfortunately some timbers may not be able to be sourced, or may be completely unsuitable for certain designs.
How are the lights packaged and protected during shipping?
I build a custom box for every piece out of 3mm or 4.75mm MDF board — they’re just too valuable to be destroyed in transit. Each light is then carefully wrapped in bubble wrap for even more protection. I take extra care because I know how much these pieces mean to you.
Can the lights be flat-packed for easier transport?
Yes. Some of my designs can be broken down and flat-packed where necessary.
Installation & Electrical
Do the lights come ready to install?
Yes. Each light comes complete with ceiling fixing plate, cable, and bulb (where applicable). You will need a fully qualified electrician to install it safely.
Are the lights dimmable, and what bulbs do you recommend?
Most lights are fully dimmable. I generally supply high-quality LED bulbs in warm white (2000K–2700K), and I’m happy to supply other options. If a light isn’t dimmable for some reason, I’ll always point that out in the listing description.
Do I need an electrician to install the lights?
Yes. In New Zealand you cannot legally wire anything requiring mains electricity unless it’s done by a fully licensed and registered electrician — that’s the law. All electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician to meet New Zealand safety standards, and any warranty will be void if proof of this cannot be provided. All my lights are tested in front of me before they leave my workshop.
Are the lights suitable for bathrooms or damp areas?
Some designs can be made suitable for bathrooms (IP-rated). Please ask me about your specific needs and I’ll advise what’s possible.
Care & Maintenance
How do I clean and look after my timber light?
Simply dust with a soft dry cloth. For marks, use a lightly damp cloth with mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
Will the timber colour change over time?
All natural timber will gently age and darken slightly over time, especially if exposed to direct sunlight. This is part of the beauty of real wood.
Pricing, Payments & Policies
Why are your lights more expensive than mass-produced ones?
Each light is individually designed and handcrafted by me in my Tauranga workshop using premium New Zealand native timbers. You’re buying a unique piece of artisan craftsmanship, not a mass-produced item.
What payment options do you offer?
I accept bank transfer and credit card via Shopify (New Zealand).
What is your warranty and return policy?
All lights come with a 2-year warranty on workmanship and materials. Because each piece is handmade to order, returns are only accepted if there is a manufacturing fault.
General
Where are the lights made?
All lights are designed and handcrafted by me in my small workshop in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
Are you the actual maker (Mac)?
Yes! I’m Mac Robertson and I personally make every single light.
Can I visit your workshop in Tauranga?
I’m occasionally happy to arrange workshop visits by appointment, but it’s best to contact me first as I’m often busy in production.
